This Week in Softball

My daughter Kayla (pictured) played for the first time in years on Tuesday, filling a vacancy on her sister Angie's team which is sponsored by The Ottawa Citizen. She didn't look out of place, stopping a hot grounder with her shin (an impact I heard all the way back at the bench), a bloop with her knee and subsequent grabs with the glove she borrowed. Her ball contact was consistent, though quick infielding by my co-workers at Rogers Radio kept her off the sheets until late in the game. But the Citizen squad was not to be denied, with Angie pounding a deep left-field grand slam to ignite a rally that the Rogers Rovers would not recover from. Angie's boyfriend, Rob, connected early and often with a first-inning homer that would set the tone. The lightening quick fielding tandem of Rob (short) and Angie (2nd base) was to prove too daunting for even the quickest of Rogers base-runners. These two are quite the combo, folks. The final score was something like 20-6 for the Citizen team which included 3 old guys, 1 old lady and a drunk guy name JP who defied logic with brilliant ball contact and remarkable fielding. Yes, ball fans, not a proud moment for the Rovers who tried everything, including yanking out the rule book and waving in front of a guy with literacy issues.
It was quite the night for the ol' knothole gang. These guys should sell tickets.
Elsewhere in sports, my son Bob played Sunday night and batted 1.000. Sweeeeeet!
